Firefighter Video Training
Working Fire Training DVD Operation...
Problems?

If you're having trouble accessing materials or playing the video on the DVD, please check the following:

First, you must be using a computer that has a DVD-ROM drive; a regular CD-ROM drive won't read a DVD disk. If you don't have a DVD-ROM drive, but your computer is still fairly new, you can add one for about $40. It's a pretty simple process if you've never done it before. If no one in your department knows how, call us and we'll talk you through it.

Otherwise, when you put the DVD in your DVD-ROM drive, a number of things may happen, depending upon the kind of DVD player software your computer has (or doesn't have!). It's hard to give definite instructions because they're all different, but here's what could happen.

1. You put the disk in the machine and it "auto-starts" the monthly Working Fire Training video program on the disk. If it does, it will eventually take you to the Working Fire Training Menu (the one with the moving background) where you can click to view the video or select the training materials.

2. If that doesn't happen, you will probably get the DVD Training Materials menu to the left. (To force the DVD TMs menu to open, click on My Computer and left-click on the icon of the DVD-ROM drive and the menu should open.). Depending on how your computer's preferences are set, it's possible that the video program menu AND the DVD TMs menu may BOTH open -- the best of all possible worlds.

3.  Let's go through the DVD Training Materials menu first (to the left), then get back to playing the video.

If you click on the first "PDF" button, the .PDF version of our training materials and segment quizzes will open if your computer already has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on it. (Acrobat Reader is a free player that is used to view .PDF files.) If  Reader isn't installed or the file doesn't open because a message says it can't find the application it needs, then click the Install Acrobat Reader button and follow the installation instructions. You will then be able to view the .PDF materials on your monitor or save them to your hard drive. Either way, you can print them out. Quizzes are on the last 3 pages.

4.  PowerPoint is great for presenting the training materals to a group or training class. If you want to view the training materials on PowerPoint, click the PowerPoint button on the menu. You can save all the Training Materials files to your hard drive by navigating to the DVD-ROM drive in My Computer, right-click on it and left-click on Open. Then open the Training Materials folder and copy the contents of that folder to your local hard drive. Or find the same materials on the Training Materials page of our web site and download them from there. There you will also find a PowerPoint version without embedded video.

5. Now, back to the playing the video. First, of course, you can always play the DVD in a standard DVD player and it will function just like a typical DVD, with a menu where you can watch the program in its entirety or choose specific segments to watch.

If you want to watch the video program on your computer, insert the DVD in your DVD-ROM drive. If you have DVD-ROM-playing software like PowerDVD or WinDVD, the Working Fire Training video program may Auto-start for you. If it won't Auto-Start, you can try this:

  • First, open My Computer and right-click on the DVD player icon. You will get a menu with a Play option. Left-click on Play and if you have DVD-playing software already installed, it will open and play the video. If you don't, you'll get a message telling you the computer can't find the player software.
  • In that case, right-click as before, but this time left-click on the "Play with Your Resident DVD Software", whatever it might be named.  (If you don't see this option, click here.) Your resident DVD software will load and you will see a splash screen that will probably look something like this one from Power DVD software:

  • If you click on the Cyberlink logo at the bottom, you will get the Cyberlink player controller shown here. Your software will have some kind of simlar player:

  • Click the triangle in the middle of the controller wheel (see red dot above) to play the video. Your software will have some similar "Play" button. You may also see this dialog box:

  • If so, choose to play the DVD title from the beginning or resume where you left off.

6. Once the video starts, it will eventually take you to the Working Fire Training Menu (the one with the moving background) where you can click to view the entire video or select a specific segment to view.
